In the nick of time
My motto, my nemesis
My days overfilled with
Kids needing
Husband wanting
Daughterly obligations
School “volunteering”
Catholic guilt
Running miles – Ha! No
Running behind – yes
Secretary, chef, driver
Driving myself crazy
Oh look something else to sign up for!
This quadrille responds to De Jackson’s (WhimsyGizmo) quadrille prompt #87 – Nick and Jamie Dedes’ Wednesday Writing Prompt to write about my life and the things/events that make an impression on me.
Well, if you’ve been following my blog for any amount of time, you know my poetry and prose usually revolve around my identities as a mother and runner. This quadrille is no exception!
The school year has started for all my kids, even my preschooler is in three day PreK. Yet despite having three days “all by myself,” I find myself still running out of time, running late, running from appointment to appointment. I’ve signed up to help out at their school and at our church while training for a race, writing and keeping up with household duties. This might not be a lot for other people, but it’s a lot for me. I’ve been thinking about going back to work outside the home but where would I fit that in? That “nick” of time is not truly enough.

Forty four words are definitely not enough to describe your full life! Love how you enumerated everything broadly and yet so much is still left out! Kudos to you girl for managing so much. ❤️❤️

Thank you although at times it doesn’t feel like it’s enough…. but maybe life is like that half full glass of water….

The glass is half full is a way more positive way to look at it than deeming it half empty!
You are doing a fantastic job, keep it up!

Oh, I have been in that season of life! Preschool is deceptive freedom. By the time you drop off and run one or two errands, it’s already time to go back. 😉 Mine are teens now, and it’s easier in some ways, harder in others. “I do run” too, when I can. Slowly. So I LOVED these lines, especially:
“Running miles – Ha! No
Running behind – yes”

Thank you, De! Every season of motherhood has its pros and cons. I like to think my love and motivation for running also has its seasons…

Hi Irma. Wonderful use of the word nick in your quadrille. I definitely understand catholic guilt. Took me years and years to shake the tendency. Had it beat into me in the 1950’s by the nuns.

I hear that – our nuns were strict but didn’t use the stick. Although I think the guilt might have been worse – bruises fade but guilt can live forever….

Congrats for getting a run in. Have you heard “A 5K a day keeps the doctor away”?
